Weight Loss Medications
We understand there has been an increased interest in weight loss medications.
Please note that, at present, patients may be considered for weight loss medication if they meet the following criteria:
- A BMI of 35 or above
- Four or more weight-related health conditions from the list below:
- Dyslipidaemia (high cholesterol)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes

Patients can also access weight loss support through referral to a Tier 3 weight management service.
These medications may also be prescribed as part of the treatment for Type 2 diabetes, depending on an individual's circumstances and how effective other treatments have been.
Please note that the current arrangements for weight loss medication are under review. The information provided above is correct based on current guidance and is expected to remain in place until March 2027.
